Impact of Fukushima Contaminated Water on Neighboring Countries - Rota Island

In April 2023, I visited the Northern Mariana countries (Saipan, Tinian, and Rota) to see how the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean would affect neighboring countries. The Japanese government has announced that it will release it into the Pacific Ocean in the spring or summer of 2023.

Many people there depend on fishing for their livelihood, and if radioactive contaminated water continues to be discharged into the Pacific Ocean over the next few decades, it will inevitably have an impact on fish and the marine ecosystem. The Northern Mariana legislature, consisting of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota, has passed a resolution against the discharge since 2021.

(Photo: Rota. This fisherman said that the Japanese buoys drift to Rota. This is the best proof that the ocean currents from Japan have an impact there as well).

The Japanese government claims that tritium is safe because it is reduced by treatment, but it is unclear how this will affect the marine ecosystem. Once discharged, the lives of the local people will be irreversible.

The discharge into the Pacific Ocean should be stopped and replaced by other alternatives. And it must also be fundamentally questioned whether it is really acceptable for a nuclear power plant to dispose of radioactive waste in such a state.
